Fedor vs. Werdum:(With Video)The Tap Heard Around the World of MMA.
On Saturday night Fedor tasted the first legitimate defeat of his career tapping out to Fabricio Werdum. Fedor rushed Werdum early and knocked him to the canvas. Fedor then tried to swarm in for the finish, a big mistake considering that Werdum has excellent jiu-jitsu skills. Fedor while wildly swinging for the finish was caught in a triangle choke-armbar combination leading to the tap heard around the world of MMA. Full fight video at end of this post
Until that fateful tap Fedor appeared to be invincible but unfortunately that has now been stripped from his legacy. M-1 Global had built their promotion with Fedor as the center figure and regardless of what Fedor does from here, the leverage M-1 Global once had within the MMA world is now nearly gone.
UFC President, Dana White posted the “: D” on his Twitter account and who could blame him since he has endured endless attempts and requests to get Fedor in the UFC to no avail because of M-1 Global and its demands for cross promotion. It also comes at a time prior to UFC 116 where many will be unable to deny the outcome of the true heavy weight champion to be decided when Brock Lesnar faces off against Shane Carwin.
Werdum in the meantime has earned a legendary status. No matter what he does in his career from here on out, he will always be remembered as the man who made the invincible Fedor cry uncle. As for Fedor, the man who won 29 consecutive bouts then makes a mistake resulting in his first loss, well he embraced his defeat like the humble fighter that he is and he will always be one of the great MMA fighters. He is no longer invincible and serves as a reminder that no fighter no matter how great is unstoppable. If anything this should give Chael Sonnen hope in his upcoming match against Anderson Silva.
Strikeforce women’s middleweight champion Cris “Cyborg” Santos scored her eighth technical knockout in nine fights earlier, disposing of Ohio’s Jan Finney in the second round. Santos battered the tough Finney, out-striking her 141-23 and ending the bout by delivering a hard knee to Finney’s head and a final flurry of punches that caused referee Kim Winslow to stop the fight at the 2:56 mark of the second round.
Cung Le, the former Strikeforce middleweight champion, scored a second-round TKO over Scott Smith in a rematch of their December fight that Smith won via a miraculous KO after being outclassed and battered for almost three rounds.
Cung Le insured that there were no miracles to be had as Le was methodical and struck with accuracy and impressive stand-up combinations before landing a spinning leg kick to Smith’s gut that sent Smith to the canvas in agony. Le then moved in for the finish, landing punches until the referee stopped it. .
Josh Thomson (17-3) of San Jose held on and outlasted a strong performance from Pat Healy who was able to drag Thompson down to the mat on several occasions throughout the first two rounds. Coming into the third round it was apparent that Pat had begin to slow down and Josh was the fresher fighter and Josh was able to get Pat Healy to tap out in a chokehold with 33 seconds left in the final round.
