Dana White: On WEC Lightweight Div Move to UFC
During a recent USA Today interview with UFC president Dana White he discusses the possibility that Zuffa owned WEC’s 155-pound weight class will eventually become part of the UFC and the possible introduction of a WEC Flyweight division .
Dana White
“I think eventually what we do is, we’re going to continue to add to lighter weights, and you’ll end up seeing these (WEC) guys go into the UFC, the 155 pounders. “
USA Today’s Sergio Non
“So once you add flyweight or divisions like that, you can move WEC’s lightweights and move them into UFC, is what you’re saying?”
Dana White
“Yup”
The current WEC lightweight division is currently loaded with great talent but is sometimes considered as the minor league compared to the UFC’s Lightweight division. I myself tend to think some of these fighters would do quite well in the UFC, for example you have a great lightweight match scheduled for Saturday’s WEC 48 pay-per-view event between Benson Henderson and Donald Cerrone in a rematch of a bout that was considered by many as 2009 Fight of the Year. On the downside, the UFC’s acquisition of the LW division could result in a reduction of LW fight activity.
In the interview, White also talks about why the UFC is using their announcing and production teams for WEC 48. He also states all future Zuffa pay-per-views will be handled by the UFC’s team.
Q: How come the regular UFC faces, if you will, are taking more of an active role this time for WEC?
Dana White
“The way I look at it is, it’s a Zuffa promotion, and this is the team for pay-per-view. Obviously when the WEC is on Versus, they have their team and everything else, but this is the pay-per-view team.”
